Episode 3: No Man's Land / by Bryan West

Damn! This comic was just a few hours late. My commitment to posting one entry per month is already slipping. I am truly the worst kind of bastard....

...Happy Labor Day! This month's entry is something that I have had sitting around for at least 3 years. When I feel a strong attraction to someone I become a nervous gibbering wreck and I wanted to write something that illustrated those feelings. I hadn't originally intended for the comic to contain a WWI scene. Honestly, I had completely forgotten about this piece, but I was flipping through one of my old journals and found it among the feverishly scrawled notes and doodles. It is certainly very “emo”, but I like to think that it has a youthful tone which actually captures my feelings quite well. Once I had the idea of playing out the romantic drama with a WWI scene it all flowed very quickly.

I tried to loosen up a bit this month, and went back to inking with my Winsor & Newton brush. Despite a few wonky panels, I'm really quite happy with this. I've been studying a lot of Darwyn Cooke, Bruce Timm, and Chris Samnee. My influences may be resting awkwardly on the surface, but I really feel like I'm beginning to develop a style that I am comfortable with. I used my Pentel Auquah pen for the ink washes. Still getting used to this process, but I really like the look and feel of ink washes. I would have liked to add more value in photoshop, but this was a very busy month, and I only had a couple dyas to get this written, draw, and posted.

That's all for now, enjoy the long weekend, and please share my comic with your friends!
